Everything You Need to Know about the Internet of Things!

Without a doubt, the internet has broken numerous boundaries across the world. Getting people connected to each other in a single swipe, click, and tap, it has made communicating to one another more enchanting, convenient and dynamic.  Of course, after focusing on how people make these connections, innovation has brought upon us the second step in internet communication and has upgraded to how networks and devices interact with each other. Simply put, this connection amongst things that are inanimate, compounded by commands, sensors and connectivity, is the what IOT means or the Internet of Things!  With the projections that by the year 2020, the global market of IOT is to likely escalate to an estimated net worth of $457 Billion, more and more companies such as Spectrum, Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, and Skyworks Solutions have and are continuously investing in the IOT technology as its annual growth have risen to up to 28.5%.

IOT meaning: What is it?

Technically, IoT means connectivity to the internet amongst devices used by a certain user (personal or business).  These devices are installed with sensors that would automatically provide data on the device’s location, speed, temperature, and everything needed for data analytics. Using various local area network technology such as RFID and Wi-Fi, these sensors are then made to connect and share selected information to each other. Not only that, they are even allowed to make broader connections with GSM, 3G, and LTE! Once connected, the data needed are then gathered by the interconnected devices are uploaded to the IoT platform of choice where it is monitored, filtered, and analyzed.  Simply put, IOT means the sharing of gathered data and the automation of the devices in response to the given data and in providing the data. While the meaning of IOT varies depending on who uses it, it can be therefore concluded that its main aim is to be of great aid to mankind, if used correctly and properly.

To fully understand how the Internet of Things works, here are several terms used in relation to IOT:

  • Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) refers the efforts of the internet of things to consume minimal power by networking devices which are of proximity to each other. Through this, the internet of things can already be accessed in the office and at home by everyone!

  • Embedded Software refers the all the programs that control and monitor the hardware needed to execute the command without physical attribution to any individual. After having been programmed prior to the network, this software operates even in the absence of an operating system.

  • Gateway refers to the central point of the IOT network where they meet and interact in lieu with the programmed instructions. With all the data needed are gathered in the gateway, a specific reaction to a certain scenario is then administered – say, to talk precautions or to prepare what has been ordered to be prepared. Examples of gateway include routers and switches.

  • Machine to Machine (M2M) refers to the association of the different machines and devices to each other. When a device provides another device some input like data about an individual or a certain update about the machine, it is already by the work of IOT. This is the real essence of the internet of things – making an information readily available from one device to another. This is the reason why it is called as Machine to Machine transaction.

  • Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) refers to the use of electromagnetic field for the devices to keep in track with each other. Using the internet of things, services in the automotive department, healthcare, and agricultural industry is made to become easier and more efficient as data are automatically gathered and analyzed.

To identify the significant purpose of the Internet of Things in a different retrospect, here are the different applications of IOT:

  • Develop Agriculture. With the gradual change in the environment, the field of agriculture has indeed suffered so much. The problems faced by the agricultural sector become so massive that it has tremendously affected the forces of supply and demand. In order to address this, growers have tested the many solutions the internet of things can offer to be of help for this matter.  IoT devices were then maximized to check the fertility of the soil in reference to the environmental condition of the place and the crops being monitored and how much is being harvested. Thus, the temperature, humidity, and rainfall were duly noted for further data utilization. When the data are completed, farmers can then execute methods to adopt, stay efficient by improving or maximizing irrigation systems, water saving machineries, and reduction of human labor. Since the devices powered by IoT are capable of predicting and monitoring the climate in a specific region (when all necessary data are provided), outdoor agriculture would be more productive than ever. Thus, this would really eliminate some of the constant struggles of our farmers and still allow them to put more food in the table for people to eat.

  • Upgrade use of Automobiles. Not only did the internet of things infiltrate the agriculture sector, it also has made itself known in the automobile industry!  With the help of IoT, it is now easier to track and monitor automobiles. Now, automotive companies can easily use newly created IoT programs in order to examine the performance of the vehicle being tested and made for distribution. The sensors installed on buses and cars provide the necessary data to the nodes of the network which would then help manufacturers detect defects in the vehicle before it would create massive damage to the driver, buyer, and even the company. Moreover, with the program set on the automobile, this assures drivers that they would be notified of possible security and comfort threats before worse turn worst.  Internet of things also gives way to driverless cars which are still in the test phase as of today.

  • Improve Business and Industry. By adding sensors to the machines in the factory, it is easier to track machines that needed to be fixed before they bring massive damage to the production. The internet of things helps enterprises to find the bottleneck in the manufacturing process. By doing so, machines are then able to generate data and produce response in accordance to the data being gathered. Truly a breakthrough, the internet of things eliminates the perennial methods of preventive maintenance, rather adapts the predictive measures which totally saves time and money for production in any business sector. This means more return of investment to the company.

  • Creation of Smart Cities. With the integration of the internet in the day-to-day activities of every individual, it not a surprise to have it finally adapted in a bigger scale; and by bigger scale, this means community-wide, ergo, city wide. If cities opt to incorporate the internet of things into the picture, this would greatly affect the daily dwelling of each member of the society with regards to transportation, energy consumption, and heightened security measures.  By consolidating the internet in these essential operations, it is easier to monitor the water supply of each household and of various companies (big and small), public security through city-wide surveillance, and easier access during payment of bills. Just imagine, by just connecting your car to the internet, you can immediately secure a space in the parking lot without hurrying, overtaking, and even causing a ruckus amongst other drivers. Moreover, this information can also be maximized in avoiding traffic and in making the daily transport problem finally put into a solution. Not only that this helps keeping peace and order in the community, this also highlights the movement to a cleaner environment. With the use Smart Belly Trash, the sanitation department are then informed when the bins are full or overloaded; thus, minimizing the issue on overflowing of garbage and improper disposal of waste. Most importantly, these machines and devices are programmed to report each other should there be problems with their function, making it easier to address problems and fix devices.

  • In-depth Health Care Services. It is a given fact that not all hospitals can give you the exact treatment that you need for this would highly be dependent on the available facilities and personnel. Thus, it would take time to move from one hospital to another as it would require a request on the previous diagnosis and check-ups that you had. Well, worry no more since the internet of things can easily integrate the Intersystem Platform with all your medical records and lightweight directory access protocol. This would greatly help doctors in assessing patients and in handling the complex clinical workflow that would sometimes result to redundancies and severe human errors.

Truly, the Internet of Things (IoT) has immensely changed the way people execute their daily tasks given the numerous options aided with technology. It has made more people become more connected to each other creating better relationships, forging bonds thicker than blood. With this created bond, the internet of things proved that technology can really be of great help if used in smarter ways. Thus, it has made this world technically advanced than what it was several years ago.
